Abstract

SUMMARY
As the global prevalence of overweight and obesity continues to increase year on year, the associated threat to the health and wellbeing of pregnant women and their infants, as well as the cost of managing adverse pregnancy outcomes, is becoming increasingly significant.
In this cross-sectional study, 393studied females according to inclusion and exclusion criteria,came for antenatal care in Beni Suef University hospital and Sumasta General Hospital, in the period from July 2018 to February 2019 with measurements of BMI were included. Data regarding demographics, clinical characteristics, complications and outcomes were collected and analyzed.
Our data analyses reveled that:
Most of the studied females were less than 30 years old 86.7 and the majority of them were from rural area 70.5%. The majority of the participated females were illiterate 42.2%, while the majority with low income 62.5%.According to BMI classification that theprevalence of obesity among the studied females were 57.8% and a 10.0 % for morbid obesity. Our results showed that there is no significant association between BMI and residency and maternal education.Association between BMI measurement and delivery circumstances showed that there was a significant statistical regarding premature rupture of membrane. Association between BMI and indication for emergency section showed a significant association.Association between BMI measurement and pregnancy hypertension, pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes showed a significant association. The result also showed that C.S delivery was associated with obese (30-34.99) and morbid obesity (more than 35), p value <0.001, higher BMI was associated with higher birth weight than 4000 mg and p value significant at 0.001and higher BMI is associated with NICU admission; p value significant at 0.001. The result showed that cases with mild depression were associated with higher BMI comparing to cases with no depression P value; 0.001.According to correlation the results showed that there was a significant moderate negative correlation between Apgar score of the new born and BMI of the mother.
In conclusion,High prevalence of obesity among the studied participants as the majority of the studied females 57.8 were obese and a 10.0 % of showed morbid obesity there was significant association between obesity according to BMI classification and maternal health during pregnancy, delivery state and fetal outcome there was a significant moderate negative correlation between Apgar score of the new born and BMI of the mother.
 Recommendations:
 Our study recommend that existence of programs to combat the spread of obesity among adolescents and school students.
 Pre-marital education and awareness about complications of obesity.
