Abstract Thrombocytopenia is a frequent medical problem among critically ill patients, which affect their outcome. Its prevalence in those patients is variable among different ICU types, different studied populations and different admission causes. Thrombocytopenia in ICU patients was well studied in western and Asian countries, while in Egypt, there was limited studies which dealt with this problem, so more studies are needed to determine the magnitude and impact of this problem on patient’s outcome, so we designed our study to determine the period prevalence of thrombocytopenia in medical ICU patients, and to identify the its etiological, severity and timing pattern and finally to detect its impact on patient’s outcome. In our prospective cohort study, 400 patients, who were admitted consecutively to MICU of internal medicine hospital in Zagazig university, were enrolled. We excluded41patients due to either incomplete data (17 patients) or loss of follow up within the ICU (24 patient). Then the remaining 359 patients were eligible for analysis. |
