Abstract

The current study was carried out to evaluate the ameliorative effect of thymol against gastric and hepato-renal injury induced by acetylsalicylic acid administration in male rats. 48 adult male albino rats were allocated into six 6 equal groups.
Effect on gastric volume and pH and levels of pepsin and PG2 of gastric juice: Our result revealed that oral administration Pre and concurrent administration of thymol with ASA induced a significant increase in pH and PG2 level and a significant decrease in gastric volume juice and pepsin level compared with those of ASA only-treated group.
Effect on some biochemical parameters: Oral administration of Pre and concurrent administration of thymol (100 or 200 mg/kg) with ASA (150 mg/kg) induced a significant decrease in ALT, AST, ALP, creatinine levels and urea concentraton when compared to ASA only-treated group.
Effects on oxidant/ antioxidant status and levels of TNF-α and MPO: Pre and concurrent administration of thymol (100 or 200 mg/kg) with ASA induced a significant increase in gastric, liver and kidney antioxidants GSH concentration and (SOD, and GPx) levels, while MDA,TNF-α concentration and MPO level were decreased compared with ASA only-treated rats.
Histopathological Findings: Thymol treatment ameliorated the acetylsalicylic acid-induced nephropathic changes, particularly at a dose of 200 mg/kg. The renal tissue sections of the Thymol 100+ASA-treated rats showed minute hemorrhages with very few numbers of interstitial leukocytes, whereas the kidneys of the Thymol 200+ASA-treated rats appeared almost normal, although few sections manifested as vascular congestion.
