Abstract

Pediatric patients who are critically ill and need advanced airway, respiratory and hemodynamic support are admitted in Pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to improve outcome.
Aim: The aim of this study was to assess the course and outcome in patients suffering from acute neurological illness and admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit in Cairo University Children Hospital.
Methods:This retrospective study included 100 patients and was conducted in the 6th floor pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) in Cairo University Children Hospital over a period of 4 years (starting February 2017 till February 2021).
Results: Regarding continuous EEG studies, 54% of cases showed encephalopathic pattern in EEG, 36% showed epileptiform discharges and 10% showed focal discharges.
Conclusion:Acute neurological disorders are common in PICU, and are associated with higher mortality. CNS infections, status epilepticus and severe traumatic brain injuries were the most common neurological illnesses in our cohort
