Abstract

Mosul, which was created in the seventh century B.C., superseded Nineveh as the most significant city in several historical eras. Nonetheless, Mosul achieved its zenith of dominance during the Zangid Dynasty in the 12th century A.D. The oldest and most significant component of Mosul’s Old City architecture dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries A.D., demonstrating the city’s significance, power, and influence during the Zangid Dynasty. As a result, the Old City of Mosul, with its many ancient structures and sites, may be considered as the result of centuries of value exchange and is a tribute to Iraq’s rich cultural diversity in both physical and intangible forms. Urban development may be implemented by a variety of acts, including enhancing living conditions in residential neighborhoods, redeveloping public spaces, restoring historic regions, and upgrading urban infrastructure. Despite the fact that sustainable development affects the urban plans of both big and small cities, it aids in resolving the ever-increasing difficulties of urban areas. It also aids in resolving issues encountered by local governments, businesses, non-profit groups, and people. Consequently, the concept of a sustainable city encompasses not only the use of new technology, but also the improvement of living circumstances and the preservation of the environment in order to improve the quality of life. This study focuses on adopting an inductive methodology of urban regeneration and sustainable city development, to be applied to the sustainable urban regeneration of city centers in historical cities. This will be accomplished by evaluating the link between the major principles of urban regeneration and sustainable development in order to compile an exhaustive list of chosen principles. This inductive process will be confirmed by comparing relevant case studies. The instance of historical Mosul is examined in an effort to apply the assembled concepts and principles and to validate the viability of the construction of development prospects. As a case study, the historic city center of ”Mosul” will be used to examine these situations utilizing numerous research methodologies, such as personal observation and evaluation. This research intends to provide a set of intervention principles for comparable urban situations, both in general and in the specific example of Mosul’s city center with its unique characteristics.
