Abstract

Summary
Weaning defined as process of liberating the patient from mechanical support as well as from endotracheal tube, which can take more than 56% - 90% of the time of MV (Keykha A. et al., 2017). Determining the patient’s readiness for the process of weaning from MV is very important
The original checklist of Burns wean assessment program (BWAP) was developed as tool to measure patient’s readiness for weaning from the ventilator and evaluates parameters of patients’ weaning systematically and examines all parameters related to pulmonary function, gas changes, physiological and psychological conditions of patient (Baptistella et al, 2018).Therefore the Aim of this study was to evaluate weaning outcomes of mechanically ventilated patients using burns’s wean assessment program versus routine method . Quasi-experimental research design was used to conduct this study. The sample of this study consist of 110 adult patients connected to the ventilator for more than 72 hours in general intensive care unit at Sohag university hospital. Tool used in this study consisted of three main tools Ι) Routine Weaning Assessment sheet for Mechanically Ventilated Patients, ΙΙ) Burn’s Wean Assessment Checklist and Ш) Mechanically Ventilated Patient’s outcomes Assessment sheet.
For The control group assessed patient’s readiness for weaning by subjective judgment of physicians. (SPT is the traditional approach to weaning patients from mechanical ventilation) and for the study group Burn’s weaning assessment program was used to assess the patient’s readiness for weaning from day of admission, the process of weaning was performed for the patients who obtain above 17 score from checklist.
This assessment was conducted only in morning and afternoon shifts, and was stop at night shifts due to the patient’s need to relax and the impossibility of weaning process.
The main results:
The result of the current study revealed that regarding cause of ICU admission, the respiratory cause was the comments causes in both study and control group with no statistically significant difference P value was (0.998). also, regarding success of weaning there was highly
