The study aims to identify the effect of using some active learning strategies in teaching reading on developing the skills of language sense and reading comprehension among the first-grade preparatory female students. The sample comprised of (80) first grade preparatory female students at Balsfoura Preparatory School for Girls, Sohag Educational Administration, Sohag Governorate, in the scholastic year 2013/2014. The participants were divided into an experimental group that adopted the strategies of active learning, i.e. cooperative learning “learn together” (think-pair-share) and Jigsaw and a control group that adopted the traditional approach. The results showed the effectiveness of using some active learning strategies in developing language sense test for the test as a whole at the significance level of (0.05), suggesting a statistically significant value. It also demonstrated the effectiveness of using some active learning strategies in developing reading comprehension skills at the significance level (0.05), suggesting a statistically significant value.
The study recommends immersing the skills of language sense and reading comprehension in Arabic language curricula. Furthermore, preparation programs should show the teachers of Arabic language how to use and diversify active learning strategies, including cooperative learning “learn together”, (think - pair - share) and Jigsaw.
