Abstract

Background: Patient safety is the main concern of all healthcare systems around the world; one of the international patient safety goals is medication administration safety aim: Evaluate the effect of a patient safety training program for nurses on medication administration at Damanhour Chest Hospital. Used for applying this study subjects and method: Design: An intervention design. Setting: the study was carried out at the critical care unit in Damanhour Chest Hospital. Subjects: The sample of the study all nurses working in above mention setting with a total number of 64 nurses. Tools: Six tools were used, Tool I: Nurses’ knowledge regarding patient safety. Tool II: Nurses’ knowledge regarding medication administration questionnaire. Tool III: Observational Check list for Nurses’ skills regarding patient safety. Tool IV: Observational Check list for Nurses’ skills regarding medication administration. Tool V: Nurses’ attitude regarding patient safety questionnaire. Tool VI: Nurses’ attitude regarding medication administration questionnaire. Results: The results revealed that nurses’ knowledge regarding patient safety preprogram recorded poor level, 100%, improved to 78.1% of excellent level post-program, declined to 54.7% at follow-up. Nurses’ knowledge regarding medication administration preprogram recorded poor level, 100%, improved to 71.9% of excellent level post-program, declined to 42.2% at follow-up. Regarding nurses’ skills regarding patient safety preprogram recorded a low level, 73.4%, and the post-program recorded a 100% of high level, which declined to 90.6% at follow-up. Also, nurses’ skills regarding medication administration preprogram recorded low level, 98.4% post-program recorded 98.4% of high level, declined to 95% at follow-up. Meanwhile, nurses’ attitude regarding patient safety preprogram recorded very good attitude, 40.6% post and follow-up program recorded 48.4% of a very good attitude. While nurses’ attitude regarding medication administration preprogram recorded good attitude, 67.2% post-program 43.8% of very good attitude declined to 40.6% at follow-up, with a highly statistically significant difference. Conclusion: patient safety program for nurses on medication administration had a positive effect on nurses’ knowledge and skills regarding patient safety and nurses’ knowledge, skills, and attitude regarding medication administration. Recommendations: Develop a procedures manual that includes procedures and techniques used in nursing care, especially medication administration procedures.
