Abstract

Lord and Shulman1 introduced the theory of generalized thermoelasticity to deal with the shortcoming of the coupled theory due to Biot.2 The waves in the coupled theory travel with infinite speeds contrary to physical observation. Some contributions to the subject are the works in previous studies.3-12 A good reference of the subject can be found in Ignaczak et al.13 This theory was extended to deal with different materials in Sherief et al.14-16 In the industry, the effect of body forces is very important. To the authors’ knowledge, all the papers dealing with body forces in the generalized theory of thermoelasticity choose to deal with solenoidal forces only to simplify the governing equations,17-19 contrary to most physical applications. In this manuscript, we show how to deal with a general nonsolenoidal body forces. The method is illustrated by applying it to a specific problem for an infinite body with a cylindrical cavity. The obvious application of our work is in the oil industry. During drilling for oil, a cylindrical cavity is formed with forces and heating affecting the surrounding medium.
