Abstract Burullus Lake is located along the Mediterranean coast in the north part of Nile Delta. This lake is a Ramsar site and has been declared as a natural protectorate in 1998. It is bordered from the north by Mediterranean Sea and from south by the agricultural lands of north Nile Delta. Burullus Lake belongs to Kafrelsheikh Governorate. Its extends between 30º 25’; 31º 32 ’N and, 30º 35’ N; 31º 07’ E. It has a total area of 410 km2. Burullus Lake is alkaline, brackish, shallow, and polluted through a system of eight drains (El-Burullus, Al-Gharbyah , El-Khashaah, Tirrah, Drain 7, Drain 8, Drain 9, El-Hoks Drain and Brinbal Canal). However, industrial, agricultural, and domestic waste discharges have increased the levels of heavy metals in the lake. The studied area was divided into three regions; eastern region, middle region and west region. Seventeen surface sediment samples (17) and twelve vibrocores (12) were collected twice in between 2008 and 2010 years for sedimentological and geochemical analysis, radiometric dating 210Pb and 137Cs and identification, deformation of benthic foraminifera. |
