Abstract

The present study was designed to compare patient satisfaction and adaptation of patients with compensated tooth surface loss using partial overlay denture and fixed provisional restorations. This randomized control study was conducted on ten patients recruited from the Outpatient Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry-Cairo University. The intervention group was partial overlay denture combined with composite build ups based on a diagnostic wax up at the raised OVD. Primary impressions, facebow records and centric relation bite records were done then, digital smile designing was done and confirmed with the patient using Bis-acryl mock up. Anterior teeth were then built up using flowable composite
adopting the flowable injection technique. Final impressions were made and partial overlay denture fabricated on posterior teeth at the new occlusal vertical dimension Comparator group, followed the same protocol but the posterior teeth were restored using
fixed provisional restorations at the increased OVD. After delivery, each patient received a questionnaire to address the patient’s satisfaction
of the new restorations and compared to another one given at baseline before treatment. Adaptation was measured using subjective symptoms after three months. The results were tabulated and
statistically analyzed to reach a conclusion. Based on the results of the current study it can be concluded that:
1. Increasing OVD using partial overlay denture combined with anterior composite build-ups showed no statistically significant improvement in patient satisfaction from the fixed provisional
temporary indirect restorations.
2. There was no statistical significant difference in patient adaptation between increasing OVD using partial overlay denture combined with anterior composite build-ups and fixed provisional
temporary indirect restorations.
Within the limitations of this study, the following can be concluded:
Whenever indicated, permanent in- crease of VDO of up to 5 mm is a safe and predictable procedure without detrimental consequences using either fixed restoration or partial overlay
dentures on posterior teeth combined with composite build ups with occluding mandibular incisal edges with maxillary palatal shelves, and that the associated signs and symptoms were self-limiting with tendency to resolve within 6 weeks
