Abstract

Varicose veins, a sign of chronic venous disease, affect around 25-40 percent of the adult population worldwide. People are more likely to develop varicose veins as they get older, as wear and tear on the veins cause their walls to weaken, allowing the vein to enlarge. The sheer prevalence of varicose veins and the substantial cost of treating late complications such as chronic venous ulcers contribute to a high burden on health care resources. Therefore, early treatment of the main cause of varicose veins is the only guarantor of resolving this significant problem affecting simple daily activities of a large portion of the population.
Traditionally, surgical ligation and stripping of great saphenous vein was done, with many post-operative hazards and relatively prolonged time for return to daily activities. Since the 1990s, the techniques of endovenous thermal ablation have emerged, such as radiofrequency thermal ablation and endovenous laser treatment, with lesser post-operative complications, lesser recurrence rates and faster return to daily activities. Our study aimed to assess the outcomes and adverse effects of Radiofrequency thermal ablation and its impact on the quality of life of the treated population.
This study revealed safety, feasibility and effectiveness of radiofrequency thermal ablation of great saphenous vein along a 6 months follow-up study period, with mild, tolerable and self-limiting post-operative adverse events.
