Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess serum level of IL-13 in vitiligo patients and its correlation to the severity of disease.
This study included 40 subjects divided into two groups. group A included 20 patients with vitiligo, 7 males and 13 females. group B included 20 healthy control subjects, 7 males and 13 females. 5 ml peripheral venous blood was taken from all subjects for measuring serum IL-13 level by ELISA technique, after taking detailed history from them and assessing the disease severity by VES score.
The age of patients ranged between 21– 56 years old with the mean age is 36.85 ± 12.67 years, 35% males and 65 % females and the age of control persons ranged between 23 – 55 years old with the mean 35.55 ± 5.26 years, 35% male and 65% females. There were no significant differences between patients and control group regarding to age and gender (P>0.05). 25% of cases had positive family history of vitiligo and 75% had negative family history. 65% of cases had vitiligo more than 3 years, 20% (1-3) years and 15% less than one year. 85% of patients had generalized lesions, 5% of patients had acrofacial and 10% had focal lesion, 25% of the patients had VIDA score 1 and 20% had VIDA score 2 and 25% had VIDA score 3 and 30% had VIDA score 4.
Serum level of IL-13 in vitiligo patients ranged from 8.30 – 21.61 Pg/ml with a mean of 12.59 ± 4.06 Pg/ml. Serum level of IL-13 in control group ranged from 7.50 – 12.81 Pg/ml with a mean of 10.08 ± 1.65 Pg/ml. Mean ± SD of VES score (severity) in the patients group was 2.55 ± 2.44and ranged from 0.08 – 7. Serum level of IL-13 was significantly higher in vitiligo patients compared to control (p=0.017). There was no statistically significant difference between serum interleukin -13 level and age, gender, family history and duration of the disease. There was no significant relation between clinical pattern of vitiligo and serum interleukin -13 level and there was no significant relation between serum interleukin -13 level and VIDA score. There was negative correlation between serum interleukin -13 level and VES score but not statistically significant and a non-significant correlation with VIDA score.
