Abstract

COVID 19 is a worldwide epidemic that resulted in the suffering of hundreds of milions of people around the world and ended the life of many milions , So many efforts should be done to prevent the spread of this epidemic. NICUs are special places which provide health services to many delicate wellbeings that have their special sufferings, so special precautionary measures should be taken not to add to their sufferings.
Aims and Objectives: 1- Assess admission regulations done at Abo Elreesh hospital and kasr Al-Ainy NICUs at the time of COVID 19 first wave pandemic peak. 2- Describe changes in the Triage system and parent’s visits. 3-Determine precautions taken by healthcare providers to protect themselves and neonates. 4- Assess maternity services and measures taken for suspected COVID 19 +ve mothers . 5- Assess commitment to social distancing practices. 6-Describe infection control measures applied to prevent spread of epidemic.
Methods: Health system research exploratory study to assess admission and precautionary measures taken during the epidemic in Abo Elreesh and kasr Al-Ainy NICUs and its effects in controlling transmission of COVID 19 .
RESULTS: Admission regulations were changed during the epidemic. Triage system was changed and visits were prevented. Strict infection control measures were followed resulting in ZERO infection rate in the neonates. Social distancing practices were adopted.
Conclusion: As the virus has a tremendous ability of spread and intense effect on life , the precautionary measures and admission regulation should be revised specially inside NICUs to protect the newborns, their families , and health care providers during the epidemic .
Recommendations: Studies are now urgently needed to produce evidence based recommendations on how to prevent the spread of COVID‐19 infection in NICUs.
