Abstract

Background Cholestasis is not a disease, rather, it is a symptom of many diseases. It is not the main cause of death, However it may lead to considerable amount of morbidity. A variety of disorders can present with cholestasis in infants. In this study we followed up all files of patients who suffered from cholestasis in Hepatology Clinic, New children hospital, Cairo university during 2005-2015. Objective: To study the outcome of patients with cholestasis by knowing the trends of cholestasis during 2005-2015 its associations, causes, manifestations and treatment. Subjects and methods: Records of all patients with cholestasis following up in Hepatology Clinic , New Children Hospital, Cairo University during 2005-2015. We collected all the recorded data in these files concerning age of onset and age of presentation, gender, address, congenital anomalies and associated conditions, all symptoms and signs, all investigations, imaging, liver biopsy, treatment and complications before and after treatment. Results: The Hepatology clinic, New children Hospital, Cairo university received 6754 infants suffering from Liver disease during the period from 2005 till the end of 2015. Out of them 779 (11.5%) infants were suffering from cholestasis, out of which 117 infants dropped out from follow up as there was no record of a second visit. So the total number of cholestatic patient is 662. Neonatal Hepatitis was the most common diagnosis present in 67.2% of cases. The outcome of patients with cholestasis was 58.3% of cases with complete recovery, 13.1% improved, 2.3% remain stable, 20.5% progressed and 2.7% of cases died. Conclusion: There was a great improvement in the outcome of patients with cholestasis this owing to early diagnosis and management of disease
