Abstract

A field experiment was carried out at El-Mahmoudia command area, El-Beheira governorate, Egypt, during two growing seasons summer and winter of 2014/2015, to Improving irrigation water conveyance efficiency using lined canal and buried pipes under Egyptian conditions. The experiment consists of three types of on-field water distribution canals (Merwas) ; earthen canal, lined canal and buried pipes. Six Evaluation parameters were measured; conveyance efficiency, water saving, irrigation time, land saving, cropping intensity and crop yield, the financial analysis had been applied. The result showed that the conveyance efficiencies were68.9%, 64.6% and58.6% for the lengths of earthen canals 200, 250 and 350 (m) and the same lengths of lined canals were97.2 %, 96.4 % and 94.6 % and buried pipes were 99.1%, 99 % and 98.6 %., The impact of development on reducing conveyance losses comparing with earthen canal were2.8% , 3.6 % and 5.4 % per year for lined canal and 0.9 % , 1 % and 1.4 % per year under buried pipes, respectively., The impact of improvement on decreasing irrigation time was ranged from 50% to 60% for the different field crops. The benefits of land saving were about 0.1% per feddan under lined canal and was an increment by average 0.3% per feddan under buried pipes., cropping intensity increment by 1.4% and 2.6% under lined canal and buried pipes, respectively and crop yield increment were 0.7 % in crop yield/year for lined canal while percentage of 1.3 % in crop yield/year for buried pipes, pumping costs decrement in the year by 35.4% from what it was before development., The costs of construction of the lined canal and buried pipes were 3716.3 L.E./fed and 2887.5 L.E./fed, respectively, the results reveal a positive impact for development of on farm profit up 5.7 % per year under lined canals and 8.1% for the buried pipeline, while a decrement in production costs by 2.9% for lining canals and 3.7% for the buried pipes
