Abstract

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a serious genetically eye disease which leads to blindness .The purpose of this study is to regenerate the damaged photoreceptor cells as a result of argon laser as a model of RP in rabbits’ retina by using MSCs from rabbits’ bone marrow. This study used MSCs in two doses (3 million and 6 million) to be injected intravitreal to regenerate the damaged cells. Determination of the level of (GSH, NO, MDA, CP, AGE and MMP-2) in blood and retina. Ophthalmological and histological examinations were performed on all rabbits. A significant increase of serum NO, plasma MDA and serum CP and decrease of blood GSH in argon laser group as compared to control group. While in (MSCs) groups NO, MDA and CP decreased and GSH increased. Outer and inner segments of photoreceptor cells began to reconstruct in histological examination in (MSCs) groups after complete detachment in argon laser group. 6 milion dose gave better results than 3 million. In conclusion, Intravitreal injection of 6 million (MSCs) can retain the function of damaged photoreceptor cells in induced RP rabbits,so it presents a new hope for restoring the sight for RP patients
