Abstract

Back ground : pancreatic head carcinoma is a highly fatal and common malignancy,the treatment of resectable pancreatic head carcinoma is pancreaticodudenectomy or Whipple`s procedure Objective: is to review and asses the outcome of the surgical management of pancreatic head carcinomain the period from year 2006 to 2010 at National Cancer Institute,Cairo University, (retrospective study). Methods: this study included 207 patients with pancreatic head carcinoma from 2006 to 2010, they were grouped to 3 groups either inoperable on presentation(123 pt),inoperable after exploration(54 pt),or operable (30 pt). Pathological types of the tumor,imaging studies,types of surgery,intraoperative complications,postoperative complications,adjuvant therapy and follow up were discussed. Conclusion:when the disease is discovered early which is localized to the pancreatic head with no distant metastasis or lymph node involvement the outcome of the surgical management and patient survival will be favorable
