Abstract

The aim of this research is to increase the volumetric energy density of the lithium Ionbattery by increasing the thickness of the electrodes which means adding more active material inside the electrodes. Besides, it reduces manufacturing costs due to reduction of cutting and stapling steps. Today’s companies care so much about the cost targets in terms of dollar per watthour by decreasing both material and manufacturing cost and increasing the energy density of the cells. However, when we increase electrode thickness, the mass transport limitations of lithium ions in the electrolyte as well as the impedance for electrons in the solid phase of the electrode become dominating which could lead to the capacity fading, higher temperature response, overall heat generation
