Abstract

The present study aimed to investigate the possible protective effect of naringenin (NAR) against dexamethasone-induced depression and to compare such effects with the antidepressant tianeptine. Pretreatment of rats with tianeptine (20 mg/kg) or NAR (50 and 100 mg/kg) provided protection against dexamethasone-induced depression as they decreased the immobility time in FST, increased the motor activity in OFT, alleviated the histopathological insults induced by dexamethasone in rat cortex and hippocampus, increased the hippocampal catecholamine contents, decreased MDA level and increased GSH level in rat hippocampus. In addition, tianeptine administration increased the hippocampal BDNF content, while NAR (100 mg/kg) administration increased the hippocampal BDNF and CREB contents
