Abstract

Despite the recognition of green space networks as vital solution for urban and environmental degradation, the majority of the Egyptian cities in general and the greater Cairo region in particular experience increasing signs of fragmentation and deprivation of accessible green spaces, which leaves people in low quality of living condition, poor air quality, excessive pollution and green space deprived neighborhoods. This made the research starts with documenting the general signs of vulnerability of urban landscape in Cairo, review urban landscape sustainability visions and science based sustainability assessment frameworks and models that can be used for deriving sustainability indicators as well as addressing the complexity of urban landscape, the study also presents urban landscape as a system and provides a system based approach to reveal linkages and key indicators of sustainability across its subsystems and related scales, in order to finally develop a heuristic assessment model for green space networks sustainability. The model is based on Bossel{u2019}s orientors theory for system sustainability assessment as a holistic and comprehensive conceptual structure that guides deriving indicators of urban green spaces sustainability, using Bayesian belief networks for modeling the system interrelationships in order to finally interpret this assessment model into guiding influence diagrams that can be used by designers and decision makers to achieve sustainable urban development goal functions
