Abstract This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of chlorhexidine solution on shear bond strength to dentin of self adhering and conventional flowable resin composites over different aging periods and identification of failure modes . A total of 120 freshly extracted sound premolars human teeth were collected and used for this study. Under water coolant each tooth{u2019}s occlusal surface was grounded to expose a flat dentin surface. According to the tested restorative materials self-adhering or conventional flowable resin composites, teeth were randomly divided into two equal main groups of sixty samples each. Each main group was divided into two equal subgroups of thirty samples each according to dentin surface pretreatment with chlorhexidine. Each subgroup was further subdivided into three equal classes of ten samples each according to the storage time, either 24 hours, three months, or after six months. All the prepared specimens were restored with the tested restorative materials according to their manufacturer{u2019}s instructions. For shear bond strength testing a cylindrical mold of two mm height was especially fabricated. The mold was consisted of two halves having a central hole of three mm internal diameter. A custom-made metal ring was used to hold the mold halves together during sample preparation. Shear bond strength test was conducted immediately, after 24 hours, three months or six months using a universal testing machine at crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min till specimens failure. Bond strength was calculated and failure modes were analyzed |
