Abstract

Environmentally friendly wood resin systems were applied to improve the properties of agro-based composites especially HCHO emission. The wood resin systems are prepared from incorporation of new xerogels-based activated carbons (XACs). These XACs were synthesized from different aliphatic chain length aldehyde, as HCHO-scavenger to the commercial urea-formaldehyde resin (UF). The XACs characterized with high porosity and the ability to adsorb some pollutants e.g. phenol, methylene blue (MB) dye and formaldehyde. The composites produced from incorporating 4% XACs to UF using bagasse fiber fulfilling the requirements for ANSI H-3 and M-2 grades. The XAC provided reduction in free-formaldehyde reached to 38%. While the composites produced from chemical treated rice straw comply with the standard specification of class M-2 and showed reduction in free-HCHO reached to 44.6%
