Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the signal characteristics of MRI diffusion weighted sequences of bone tumors and tumor like lesions and their corresponding ADC measurements and their ability to differentiate between malignant and non-malignant lesions. Material and Methods: The patients were referred to MRI unit from the surgery and radiotherapy departments in the National cancer institute (Cairo university) were assessed by conventional and diffusion MR images. Diffusion was carried out by single shot SE-EPI sequence using b values 0, 500 and 1000. ADC were automatically generated on the operating console. Results: The mean ADC of benign tumors was 1.84{u00D7}10⁻³ mm²/s±0.33 while that of malignant tumors was 1.17{u00D7}10⁻³ mm²/s±0.44. P value<0.001. ROC analysis produced cut off value for detection of malignancy of 1.47{u00D7}10⁻³ mm2/s has 89.5% specificity and 79.5%. Conclusion: DWI has been proven to be highly useful in the differentiation of benign, malignant bone tumors and tumor like bony lesions when combined as a complementary sequence with conventional MRI with the measurement of ADC values, the accuracy of the diagnosis of bone tumors and tumor like lesions will be improved |
