Abstract

Iron metabolism may be linked to the sympathetic over activity. DIOS is characterized by a higher prevalence of iron and metabolic abnormalities that are part of the iron overload syndromes. This study aimed at testing the hypothesis linking the increased baseline sympathetic drive to the hypertension seen in iron overload syndrome. 101 patients with essential hypertension diagnosed based on the criteria of the Joint National committee 7 and 50 healthy subjects of matching age and gender served as a control group were assayed for catecholamines that serve as a indicator of sympathetic system drive in hypertensive patients characterized by normal or elevated circulating plasma levels of ferritin (FE) versus controls
