Abstract

We compared the sexual function, testosterone and prolactin levels of kidney transplant recipients and end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients under hemodialysis. In our cross-sectional study 40 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing hemodialysis versus 40 kidney transplant patients were randomly selected from Elkasr Elaini urology and nephrology clinic and underwent evaluation of erectile function using the international index of erectile function(IIEF-15), serum testosterone (total) and prolactin were measured using the electro-chemiluminescence immunoassay (ECLIA). Statistical analysis was performed by student’s t-test or the chi-square test with the level of significance set at p<.05. Data are reported as mean values +/- standard error of the means. Renal transplant patients in comparison with the hemodialysis group reported a better overall sexual relationship with mean scores of the ESRD and transplanted group were respectively for erection function 16.25 (±7.285 SD), 25.28 (± 6.520 SD) (P=0.001), for orgasmic function: 5.90 (±2.697 SD), 7.53 (±2.148 SD) (P=0.004), for sexual desire: 5.85 (±2.119 SD), 8.28 (±1.710 SD) (P=0.001), for intercourse satisfaction:6.85 (±3.401 SD), 11.80 (±3.148 SD) ( P <0.001), overall satisfaction: 6.05 (± 2.407 SD), 9.20 (±1.728 SD) (P<0.001), testosterone level: 2.9190 (±1.98949 SD), 4.3458 (±1.92570 SD) (P<0.001), prolactin level: 19.1088 (±18.86020 SD), 10.3730 (±4.48549 SD) (P<0.006). Kidney transplant recipients, in comparison with the ESRD patients under hemodialysis, reported a better sexual relationship, higher testosterone and lower prolactin levels
