Abstract

Pressure ulcers (PU) are a worldwide problem affecting both hospital and community populations. Pressure ulcer are a skin and tissue damage caused by sitting or lying too long on one part of the body. They can also be caused by pressure combined with shear. Aloe vera gel as a part of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been reported to have multiple beneficial properties for wound healing. Aim of the study: examine the impact of aloe vera natural gel on pressure ulcer healing among bed ridden hospitalized patient. Sample: 60 bed ridden patient with pressure ulcer (second or third degree) were selected and divided into two equal groups. Medical, neurological, and orthopedic departments at Cairo university hospital. Quasi-experimental design had been used to achieve the aim of this study. There was statistical significant difference between study and control group regarding wound size (P<0.025*), depth (P<0.00*), edges (P<0.00*), type of wound exudates (P<0.00*), amount of wound exudates (P<0.00*), edema (P<0.01*), induration (P<0.04*), granulation (P<0.00*), and epithelialization (P<0.00*) at the second time (at the end of one week). Aloe vera (AV) natural gel as a plant-based remedy can be effective in the treatment of pressure ulcers as it enhance wound healing. It is natural, available, cheap, and with less side effect than other medication used for pressure ulcer treatment. Recommendations: Recommend using of non-pharmacological remedies as aloe vera gel (natural plant) in treatment of different types of wounds
