Abstract

Anthracycline- containing chemotherapy (eg, doxorubicin) is well known to cause dose-dependent, progressive cardiac damage clinically manifest as decreased left ventricular ejection fraction and, ultimately, heart failure and may affect quality of life. The current study was to investigate the therapeutic effect of aerobic exercises in preventing cardictoxicity induced by chemotherapy and improving quality of life. Subject: Thirty female patients post mastectomy receiving anthracycline participated in this study and their ages ranged between 40-60 years. The patients were randomly assigned into two equal groups (15 patients for each group): exercise group (A) and control group (B). Echocardiography to measure cardiac function and EuroQol-5 Dimension Scale to assess quality of life. There was significant improvement in cardiac function and quality of life in group (A) compared to group (B). Conclusion: The study concluded that aerobic exercises can be more effective in preventing heart failure and improving quality of life for patients receiving anthracycline post mastectomy
