Abstract Design of experiment techniques are used to reduce the size of the tolerance analysis and allocation problems. To increase the yield of an assembly, the tolerances of the significant dimensions are tightened while the tolerances of the insignificant dimensions relaxed. Monte Carlo simulations is used to calculate the yield of the original and suggested tolerances, and the proposed approach increased the yield of all case studies. For the tolerance allocation problem, the size of the problem is reduced by controlling the insignificant dimension tolerances at low control levels and solving the reduced problem for the significant dimensions only. Genetic Algorithms are used to solve the optimization problem. The proposed approach could reduce the size of the optimization problem by up to 88.89% by controlling one or two dimensions only |
