Abstract

Anorectal dysfunction is a prevalent condition among older people, especially women, significantly diminishing their quality of life. Surgical treatment for patients with anorectal dysfunction carries frequent recurrences, due to the lack of comprehensive analysis of the complex underlying anatomic and pathophysiologic background of pelvic floor disorders in such patients. Magnetic resonance Imaging provides visualization of all three compartments of the pelvic floor and has proved a reliable technique for accurate diagnosis, especially when involvement of multiple compartments is suspected. The new information obtained by dynamic MR defecography is considered to be higher than conventional defecography, especially in female patients. With its lack of ionization, capability of multiplanar acquisitions and with the newly established parameters of the evacuation phase, magnetic resonance imaging is considered a state of the art modality when it comes to preoperative assessment of patients with anorectal dysfunction
