Abstract

Objective:Our purpose is to analyze the association between the renal arterial resistive index (RI) and the histologic features of lupus nephritis. Patients and Methods: Thirty two patients with systemic nephritis (LN) who required a kidney biopsy were examined by Color Coded Doppler Ultrasound and as control group 5 SLE patients with no renal affection and 5 healthy cases age and sex-matched were examined too. Results: CDUS performed for 32 patients referred to Radiology department from various departments (Rheumatology And Rehabilitation , Nephrology, and others). We analyzed the association between the renal arterial resistive index (RI) and the histologic features of lupus nephritis. We enrolled 32 patients with LN, 5 with non-renal SLE and 5 healthy patients: their mean RI values were 0.57± 0.01, 0.66 ± 0.08 and 0.58 ± 0.01, respectively . A RI . 0.7 was considered pathologic, RI . 0.7 were recorded only in patients with renal SLE. The percentage of patients with a pathologic RI show high significance from class IV nephritis (p 0.007) . In conclusion: we found a significant correlation between pathologic RI and nephritis classes, suggesting a role for RI as a severity marker
