Abstract

Background: 1-The relation between Apolipoprotein E and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) has attracted increased attention. 2-Apolipoprotein E may exacerbate epilepsy and promote memory impairment in patients with long standing TLE. Aim: This study was designed to estimate serum level of Apolipoprotein E in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) compared to normal control subjects and to investigate the association between ApoE and cognitive functions in TLE patients. Subjects and methods: Thirty five patients with TLE and thirty normal subjects were included .cognitive assessment was done using minimental state examination (MMSE) and Addenbroke’s ACE-R. serum Apo E was done using E.L.I.S.A. technique. Main outcome: Levels of Apo E were expected to be over expressed in those suffering from TLE. Results: The ACE-R and MMSE mean total scores were significantly less in the TLE patients compared to the control subjects (p value= 0.000 and 0.000). Serum Apo E levels were significantly higher in TLE patients compared to control group( p=0.000).Serum Apo E was significantly negatively correlated with total ACE-R , Total MMSE and memory and visuospatial subsets of ACE-R( p value -0.764, -0.804, -0.824 and -0.444 respectively)
