Abstract

Reverse engineering can be considered as the methodological process of analyzing and reconstructing a digital model of a physical asset. It has gained considerable interest with the advent of sophisticated sensors and data processing technologies hence becoming an important enabler for the product digital twin. This report presents review on reverse engineering methodology and its application areas related to product design development. The aluminum profiles re-design and research with reverse engineering will largely reduce the production period and costs in product manufacturing industries. Due to the use of aluminum profiles in the grid structure and skeleton on which the tool slides for example in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines and other machines this is because that each machine has international specifications of Aluminum profiles cross sections. When these profiles are damaged, they must be imported from their original supplier. Particularly, if the original supplier is unable or unwilling to provide addition parts, or demand inflated costs for sole-source parts. Reverse engineering of Aluminum profiles requires extraction of information to interpret the drawing and transfer the measures into the three-dimensional software space. That was made by using digital Vernier caliper tool, adding also all the tolerance specifications. Reverse engineering of an aluminum profile using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) was developed. Aluminum profiles was measured by 3D bridge CMM with large amount of data caught, which can achieve high accuracy requirement. Its point cloud was rebuilt as a digital model, it was quickly machined by contact measuring profile points with a CMM, and the computer model was locally modified in computer assisted design (CAD) software. The multitasking, automatic operation, and time saving between a hand measured part, and one measured by a program was significant. Precise and reliable information about metal grade designation is vital for reverse engineering. from analysis and tests made on an unknown metal, it was concluded that the Aluminum Profiles imported are made of 6063 (Al-Mg-Si) alloy is widely used in the manufacture of shaped aluminum profiles produced by extrusion. However, the material of aluminum profiles was improved to be 6065 (AlMg1Bi1Si) alloy, the Addition of Bismuth (Bi) to prevent embrittlement by Sodium.
