Abstract

Corneal blindness ranks next to cataract among the major causes of blindness. Ocular trauma, as well as corneal ulceration, is responsible for most of these cases of corneal blindness worldwide. The use of Amniotic membrane transplant for cases with corneal ulcer to specific medical treatment is a well-established protocol. The extract of the AM contains most of the therapeutic components of the cryopreserved AM and proved to be beneficial for refractory cases of resistant ulcer and decreases need for surgical intervention. Our study was conducted on eighty eyes of patients with resistant corneal ulcers attending the outpatient cornea clinic in Tanta university department of ophthalmology from the period from May 2019 to May2022 however suspended during COVID-2019 outbreak for 12 months. After complete history taking, ophthalmologic examination and laboratory work up, the selected patients were divided in to two groups. A control group and study group taking Amniotic Membrane Extract eye drops as an extra adjunctive treatment to specific treatment of resistant corneal ulcer and each group consists of 40 cases. All patients received specific treatment based on initial clinical and laboratory findings with no improvement for at least two weeks; discarding resistant ulcers that was on wrong or deficient treatment plan or showing improvement to specific treatment, Amniotic membrane extract was tried as an adjunctive treatment on the study group.
