Abstract

This study conducted on Forty-eight Holstein dairy cows (n=48), at private dairy farm, were used to study the effect of dietary cation-anion differences on calcium status, blood metabolites, blood minerals, rumen parameters and milk production. Cows were divided into 3 prepartum DCAD treatments [0, -100 and -180 mEq/kg DM) (16 cows in each group)]. After calving each treatment split into 2 postpartum DCAD treatments +250 or +350 mEq/kg DM [(24 cows in each group and 8 cows in each subgroup)]. All cows were fed with total mixed ration TMR feeding system in both pre-and post-prepartum basal diet (0, -100 and -180 mEq/ kg DM), consisting of corn silage (39.34, 38.94, 38.67% DM), wheat straw (8.93, 8.85, 8.77% DM), concentrate feed mixture (51.73, 52.21, 52.56% DM) and postpartum diet (+250 or +350 mEq/ kg DM) consisting of corn silage (32.50, 32.09% DM), alfalfa hay (8.05, 8.05% DM), concentrate feed mixture (59.56, 59.86% DM). Pre- and postpartum treatments were allocated in a factorial experimental design 3 x 2. Anionic salts were used to achieve the dietary cation anion difference DCAD of the ration at the following levels.
