Abstract

Objectives: To assess and compare the 2-year clinical performance of recent bioactive ionic resin composite to resin-modified glass ionomer liner in indirect dental pulp treatment. Microshear bond strength of both liners to dentin and resin composite restorative material was also investigated. Materials and Methods: Regarding clinical trial, 20 patients were enrolled in the study. Each patient had two deep carious lesions, one on each side of the mouth. After selective caries removal, cavities were lined with bioactive ionic resin composite (Activa Bioactive Base/Liner) or resin-modified glass ionomer liner (Riva Light Cure). All cavities were then restored with nanofilled resin composite (Filtek Z350xt). Clinical evaluation was accomplished using World Dental Federation (FDI) criteria at baseline and after 6 months, one year, one and half years, and two years. Mann-whitney U and Friedman tests were used for statistical analysis. For laboratory study, 11 posterior molar teeth were sectioned to expose dentin and then placed in acrylic blocks. Each specimen received three microcylindrical tygon tubes filled with Activa Bioactive, Riva RMGI, and Filtek Z350xt resin composite. Also, 11 discs were fabricated from Filtek Z350xt resin composite and then fixed in acrylic blocks. Each specimen received two microcylindrical tygon tubes filled with Activa Bioactive and Riva RMGI. All specimens were mounted individually to universal testing machine for microshear bond strength test (μSBST). Results: Regarding clinical trial, no statistical significant differences were found between Activa Bioactive and Riva RMGI during the follow-up periods (p>0.05). For microshear bond strength test, Filtek Z350xt resin composite showed the highest values. No statistical significant difference was found between Activa Bioactive and Riva RMGI groups (p>0.05).Conclusions: After 2-years evaluation periods, the recent bioactive ionic resin composite liner exhibited successful clinical performance similar to RMGI in indirect dental pulp treatment. Laboratory investigations revealed that the bond strength of Activa Bioactive was similar to RMGI.
