Abstract

This thesis consists of ten unpublished Greek ostraca (inscribed pottery fragments); seven of them are from Elephantine, and three of them are from Apollonopolis Magna (Edfu). They belong to the Graeco-Roman period (2nd century BC, 2nd, 6th and 7th century AD). The collection is from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, and it is registered under the numbers S.R. 18955, S.R. 7/21966, S.R. 1/12894 and T.R. 19.3.27.3(a). The subject of these ostraca are varied between receipts for various money taxes, and a list of proper names. Thereafter is a brief description for the subject of each ostracon. They are arranged chronologically.
I- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 7/21966, Sr. 1/12894 and Tr. 19.3.27.3(a). This ostracon is a money payment receipt paid in a rate of one thousand one hundred and fifty copper drachmas, at (133 BC). This receipt was issued for the taxpayer Ananias son of Peues, by the bank employee Drakon.
II- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for poll tax, which paid here in a rate of 8 dr. as an installment. At the twentieth year of the Roman Emperor Traianus (AD 116 / 117). The name of the taxpayer is Harpaesis the name of his father is Petorzmetis, his grandfather being Petorzmetis and his mother being Thimeaus.
III- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for two taxes; the river guard tax and the billeting of the soldiers tax, the rate that have been paid is 4 drachmas, at 21st year of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (AD 136 / 137). The name of the taxpayer is lost in the broken part, the name of his father is Peteuris, and his mother being Thinpsansnos. The receipt was issued by the two collectors Psanmous and Petesouchos.
IV- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for two taxes, (the poll tax and the poll tax of men who have fled), the rate that have been paid for the first tax is 17 dr. 1 ob., the second rate is 1 dr. 5 ob. 2 ch., at the fourth year of the Roman Emperor Antoninus (AD 141). The name of the taxpayer is Harmonthes the name of his father is Kymous. The lessees of the Sacred Gate of Syene Herakleides and Isidoros who collected the receipt with Pachompsachis the tax farmer.
V- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for the poll tax, the rate that have been paid is 17 dr. 1 ob., at the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, (AD 141 / 143). This receipt has paid by the taxpayer son of Petorzmethis.
VI- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for three taxes, (the poll tax, prison guard tax, and the poll tax of men who have fled). The rate that have been paid for the poll tax is 17 dr. ½ ob., and for the prison guard tax ½ ob., at the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, (AD 145 / 147). This receipt has paid by the taxpayer [….] son of Petorzmethis. Zenon son of Herakleides the lessee of the Sacred Gate of Syene issued this receipt, through his assistant Sarapion.
VII- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a receipt for the Τιμὴ δημοσίου φοίνικος ” the value of public dates”. The rate that have been paid for this tax here is 1 debased drachma and 4 obols, at the twenty first year of the reign of the Roman Emperor Antoninus (AD 157). The name of taxpayer has been lost in the broken part. The receipt was issued by the collectors of money taxes (πράκτορες ἀργυρικῶν).
VIII- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 18955. This ostracon is a list of names. The available part of the text contents of about twelve proper names which ranged between males and females in various grammatical cases. Therefore the purpose of this list is not discernible. This list is expected to be registered (ca. AD 526 / 575).
IX- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 7/21966, Sr. 1/12894 and Tr. 19.3.27.3(a). This ostracon is a receipt for money tax (δημόσια), the rate has been paid is one nomismation of gold, at the fifth Indiction (ca. AD 600 / 625). The name of the taxpayer Theodosios. The financial officer Flavius Victor who collected the receipt, and Dios has been signed it.
X- O. Cairo Mus. Sr. 7/21966, Sr. 1/12894 and Tr. 19.3.27.3(a). This ostracon is a receipt for διάγραφον, the rate has been paid in seven carats of gold and a quarter, at the twelve Indiction (ca. AD 600 / 699). The name of the taxpayer is Daniel son of Tyrios.
Finally after the recearcher finished reading, translating and commenting, she clarifies at the end of my research an appendices about Elephantine Island in Aswan and the Apollonopolis Magna, from which these collections of ostraca were come.
