Abstract Sleep is a vital physiological process with important restorative functions. However, significant quantitative and qualitative sleep-related- changes occur with aging that can place one at risk for sleep disturbances including increased prevalence of chronic diseases, increased medications use, age related changes in various circadian rhythms, environmental and life style changes. Sleep disorders and sleeping difficulties are among the most pervasive and poorly addressed problems of aging.Insomnia is generally classified as primary or secondary to some underlying causes. Common causes of primary insomnia include irregular sleep patterns, poor sleep hygiene, excessive caffeine intake, certain medications, and stress. Secondary insomnia occurs most frequently in the older adult with medical or psychiatric disorders. |
