Abstract

Coronaviruses are important pathogens. At the end of 2019, a novel coronavirus was identified as the cause of a cluster of pneumonia cases in Wuhan, China. It rapidly spread, resulting in an epidemic throughout China, followed by a global pandemic. The virus that causes COVID-19 is designated severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2); previously, it was referred to as 2019-nCoV (Sohrabi et al., 2021).
Thrombocytopenia is a common manifestation and also, an indicator of poor prognosis of SARS, MERS and COVID-19. Moreover, a low platelets count correlates with higher disease severity scores such as, Multiple Organ Dysfunction Score (MODS), Simplified Acute Physiology Score (SAPS II) and Acute Physiology and chronic Health Evaluation (APACHEII) (Zhu et al., 2021).
So, this study aimed to evaluate the association between thrombocytopenia and the severity of covid-19 infection in hospitalized patients. To elucidate our results, this was a cross sectional study carried out on 800 patients with different demographic data presented to Menoufia university hospitals, National Liver Institute hospital and Shebin El-Kom teaching hospital with confirmed covid-19 during the period from April 2020 to March 2021.
All patients randomly divided into four groups according to egyptian MOHP, group I: Included 200 mild patients, group II: Included 200 moderate patients, group III: Included 200 severe patients and group IV: Included 200 critically ill patients
All participants included in this study were subjected to the following: Written or informed consent. Thorough history taking: Personal history, history of present illness (Fever, cough, dyspnea, diarrhea and abdominal pain), Past history (DM, HTN and any given drugs). General examination: vital signs, cyanosis, pallor and jaundice. Laboratory investigations: CBC:
TLC, lymphocytes, platelets count and HB, D-dimer, CRP, S. ferritin, LDH. Liver profile: S. bilirubin, AST, ALT, serum albumin. Kidney profile: serum creatinine and blood Urea. Coagulation profile: PT, PTT and INR. Radiological investigations: CT. Chest, ECHO and CT. brain.
Serology including: Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) for covid-19.
