Abstract

Cardiac catheterization is considered the effective diagnosing, evaluating and treating method of (CAD) and other cardiac diseases. It can lead to a variety of adverse events, ranging from minor complication such as temporary pain, bleeding, hematoma and contrast allergy as well as major complication such as myocardial infarction, major embolic events and death. The most common and frequent type of these complications it the vascular type especially associated with inadequate homeostasis (Ali& Ali, 2019).Patient safety is a serious global public health issue. Occasionally when people receive health care, errors associated with care may result in a serious harm such as death, disability or additional prolonged treatment. Patient safety in minimizing complications is increasingly recognized as essential in practice of coronary care unit. Individual have right to have safe and effective quality health care and is defined as being free from accidental harm (Hasballah et al., 2019).Nurses are playing an important role in cardiac catheterization patients’management (pre, intra and post), prevention of complications and maintain patient’s safety. So, nurses should be knowledgeable when preparing patients for the procedure and when providing care post procedure that includes close observation, continuous monitoring, and maintenance of hemodynamic stability (Henedy& El-Sayad, 2019).The purpose of the current study was to examine the effect of patient’s safety educational program on nurses’ performance for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.Setting: -The study was conducted in cardiac catheterization unit, cardiac care unit and cardiac department at Menoufia University Hospital and Shebin El-Kom Teachin Hospital.Subjects: A convenience sample of all available nurses (40 nurses pre/post) who are working in the selected setting.Instruments of the study for data collection:Two instruments were utilized by the researcher in this study. These instruments were: -• Instrument I: -Structural interview questionnaire• Instrument II: -Observational checklist The main findings of the current study were:• There was highly statistically significant improvement in nurses’ knowledge and performance level immediate post patient’s safety educational program implementation and in follow up phase 3 months post program implementation compared to pre program implementation. So, patient’s safety educational program is effective in improving nurses’ knowledge and performance for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.• There was highly statistically significant of mean total knowledge score and mean total performance score post intervention.
• There was significant positive correlation between grand total knowledge and grand total performance pre and post cardiac catheterization procedure. Conclusion:Based on the findings of this study, it can be concluded that patient’s safety educational program is effective in improving nurses’ knowledge and performance for patients undergoing cardiac catheterization.Recommendation:• The study should be replicated on large sample and at different hospitals settings to allow greater generalization of the results.• Further research must be conducted to evaluate effect of a patient’s safety educational program for nurses on patient outcomes and quality of provided care.
