Abstract

Adiponectin is secreted by adipose tissues and is known to be associated with anti-atherosclerotic mechanisms. Decreased plasma adiponectin levels were reported in both obese subjects and patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). Adiponectin levels were reported to correlate negatively with carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), which is a marker of atherosclerosis, in patients with type 2 diabetes. Aim of the Work: We assessed serum level of plasma adiponectin in obese and non-obese patients with T2DM and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) compared to obese non-diabetic subjects with NAFLD and non-obese normal control subjects. The correlation between plasma adiponectin and carotid IMT was also assessed in all groups.Patients and Methods: The study included 200 Egyptian subjects divided into four groups (each included 50 subjects).group (1) included obese patients with T2DM and NAFLD, group (2) included non-obese patients with T2DM and NAFLD, group (3) included obese non-diabetic subjects with NAFLD and group (4) included non-obese healthy normal control subjects. Fasting plasma adiponectin was measured using ELISA technique. Carotid IMT was assessed using high-resolution color-coded Doppler ultrasonography
