Abstract Background: Ocular trauma is a major cause of preventable ocular blindness in the world. It had been reported that 1.6 million people are blind secondary to ocular injuries worldwide, 2.3 million with low visual acuity bilaterally and 19 million with unilateral decrease in visual acuity. Pediatric ocular trauma accounts for up to 50% of all ocular trauma. Subjects & Methods: This is a prospective study during the period from 1st of June to 30th of November 2017; in which 240 pediatric patients of age less than 18 years presenting with ocular trauma at kasr Al-AinyOphthalmology Emergency Department.The demographic data of all patients and characteristics of the injury events and types were determined. Results: The most affected age group was children aged >3-9 years (36.8%). There were 174 (72.5%) males and 66 (27.5%) females. The highest proportion of injuries occurred outdoors (68.3%). Open globe injuries accounted for (50%) of injuries, closed globe (35%), adnexal (13.3%) and chemical injury (1.7%) The most common causes were inert objects (as stone, ball, toys, pen), and metallic objects as (knives, scissor or metallic wire). Open globe injuries had the worst visual outcome.Conclusion And Recommendations: Pediatric ocular trauma is a major problem in Egypt, and it is responsible for majority of unilateral blindness in children. But most of eye injuries can be prevented by several measures as; parental supervision, keeping dangerous objects away from children, and using protective eye wear |
