Abstract

In this thesis, the effect of five different types of stiffening around circular web openings on failure load is studied using the finite element program ANSYS considering both geometric and material nonlinearity. Simple beams loaded with uniform and concentrated load at center line of the beam wasconsidered in this investigation, and in every case of loading the effect of opening position along beam length and opening diameter is studied. The finite element analysis is verified using test results obtained from previous researches; and good agreement in results is found Results show that beams stiffened by both horizontal and vertical stiffeners give the highest improvement to failure load. Beams loaded with uniform load have more capacity than others loaded with concentrated load at mid span due to the variation of shear effect along beam length on Vierendeel failure formation. The parametric study is presented in few design curves
