Abstract

Introduction: Preeclampsia is a disorder of widespread vascular endothelial malfunction and vasospasm that occurs after 20 weeks’ gestation and can present as late as 4-6 weeks postpartum. It is clinically defined by hypertension and proteinuria, with or without pathologic edema. Endothelial cell dysfunction and inflammation are considered to have a role in the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia. A generalized activation of circulating leukocytes, characteristic of inflammation, has been found during PE. Moreover, increased concentrations of CRP and inflammatory cytokines have been reported in PE women. VEGF is a major angiogenic factor and regulator of endothelial cell proliferation. It has a crucial role in vasculogenesis and vascular permeability. The aim of our study is to assess the mutations in the angiogenic growth factors including the vascular endothelial growth factor in one hand and the non angiogenic factors namely the CRP and CA-125 and their capability in determining severity of preeclampsia. Patient and methods: The study included ninety patients which are further subdivided into three groups control, mild and severe preeclampsia where in each group the following parameters were assessed VEGF by real-time PCR system, CRP and CA125 are done using ELISA technique. Results: Gene mutation of the VEGF was significantly increased in severe preeclampsia group, high sensitive C-reactive protein (CRP) was significantly different between the control and mild and severe groups of preeclampsia with P value 0.0001. However as regards to the CA-125 results were significantly indifferent between the control and mild and severe groups of preeclampsia with P value 0.052. III Conclusion: we have concluded that both vascular endothelial growth factor and C reactive protein have positive correlation with development of severity of preeclampsia while the CA125 could be used as a marker for preeclampsia
