Abstract

The present investigation was designed to examine the possible hypolipidemic effect of ellagic acid, caffeic acid or carvacrol alone or in combination with simvastatin on polxamer 407 (P407) induced hyperlipidemia. Rats were injected with P407, (500 mg/ kg; i.p.), every 3 days, for 30 days. Treatment was carried out by adminstration of simvastatin (SIM) (20 mg/kg/day; p.o.), ellagic acid (EA), caffeic acid (CA) or carvacrol (CARV) (50 mg/kg/day; p.o.) or combination of SIM with each of the tested drugs. Treatment with SIM, EA, CA or CARV significantly decreased total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low density lipoprotein (LDL-C), atherogenic index, leptin and increased high density lipoprotein (HDL-c) and adiponectin. Moreover, combination of EA, CA or CARV with SIM potentiated the hypolipidemic effect of SIM and significantly ameliorated simvastatin-induced liver and muscle injury by reducing the level of alanine amiotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatine kinase (CK) and myoglobin and restoring the normal histological picture of both liver and muscle as well as decreased caspase 3 immunoreactivity
