Abstract

Background : Hand is an essential organ used in activity of daily living (ADL) and grip strength plays an important role in prevention of injury and rehabilitation as it becomes a routine part of clinical evaluation. Grip strength is one of the components that have been tested while evaluating hand function. It also provides an objective index of the functional integrity of the upper extremity. Measurement of grip strength is also an important component of hand rehabilitation as it is a measure of the effectiveness of therapy. The Purpose: To investigate the effect of three different positions of the elbow joint on the hand grip strength and myoelectrical activity of the wrist flexors in healthy individuals. Methods: Fifty normal male students volunteered to participate in this study. They were selected from the students of Faculty of Physical Therapy, Cairo University.Their age ranged from 18-25 years. Hand grip strength was tested by handle Dynamometer, myoelectric activities (Root mean square) of flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris were tested by Noraxon Myosystem 1400A, Range of motion tested by Universal goniometer and all that measured in three degrees (0{u00B0} elbow flexion, 90{u00B0} elbow flexion, and full elbow flexion). Results: The results showed that there was a significant increase in the value of hand grip strength and root mean square of Flexor carpi radialis and flexor carpi ulnaris in favor to 90{u00B0} elbow flexion position than all other elbow flexion position. Conclusion: The result of this study revealed that hand grip strength measurement was affected by elbow angles positions for male subjects and this will provide a normative data to assist the therapist in physiotherapy treatment program and gain best benefits and avoid further injuries
