Abstract

Remotely sensed data, especially satellite images of multispectral bands, are regarded as an effective tool for gathering bathymetric information, which is useful for some marine applications. The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of two water depth extraction models for the generation of reliable depths from freely available Landsat 8 multispectral satellite images in Egypt. The models used for derived bathymetry in Soma bay- Egypt were: Lyzenga linear transform, and Ratio algorithm. After the images were pre-processed, six ratios and three linear combinations were calculated and input to the ratio and Linear transform models respectively. The two models were calibrated and validated using data generated by a Single beam echo sounder (SBES) integrated with a DGPS instrument. The results showed that both models when applied to Landsat 8 images, provided depth accuracies that are suitable for preliminary design for marine applications such as shore protection. In addition, the most suitable band ratios and linear combinations were demonstrated
