Abstract

Ventilator associated pneumonia is the second most common nosocomial infection in neonatal intensive care units which leading to prolonged hospitalization. Aim of the study: to evaluate the effect of an educational program for nurses on prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia in neonatal intensive care unit. Design: A quasi-experimental one- group (pre, post and follow up). Setting: This study was carried out in neonatal intensive care units at El-Salam hospital & Specialized obstetric hospital and Al-Hayat hospital affiliated to the universal health insurance in Port Said Governorate. Subjects: A convenience sample included all nurses working in the previous mentioned settings (60) and forty (40) neonates on mechanical ventilation. Tools of data collection: Two tools were used; 1st tool questionnaire sheet for nurses’ knowledge and 2nd tool; observation checklists to assess nurses’ practices regarding prevention of ventilator associated pneumonia. Results: only two fifths of the studied nurses had satisfactory total knowledge score regarding ventilator associated pneumonia and its prevention pre program and increased to one hundred percent in immediate post program phase, while slightly decline at follow up phase. Also, improvements in total practices of the studied nurses occurred throughout program phases, whereas nearly one quarter of them had adequate total practice score pre program phase compared to most of them had adequate total practice score in immediate post program phase and slightly declined at follow up phase. Conclusion: The study concluded that implementation of the educational program was effective in improving nurses’ knowledge, practices and reducing incidence of ventilator associated pneumonia in neonates.
