Abstract

Each year millions of blood products are transfused, and many lives depend on transfusion. Platelet transfusions are used to control bleeding in patients with quantitative or qualitative platelet dysfunctions. Recently, there was a steady rise on platelet requirements for transfusion.
Platelet products available for transfusion are either RDP or SDP apheresis. PC derived from whole blood donations can be either PRP or buffy coats pooled from multiple donors, using different sequential centrifugation procedures.
A serious challenge that impacts public health is the shortage of PCs that frequently affect nations with few blood donors, such as Egypt. In addition to the lack of PCs availability, after day five of storage in blood banks all unused PC bags are discarded due to bacterial contamination and PSL, on the sixth day PCs may be missing from the stock, causing major problems in stock managements in blood banks. However, many of these packets may still contain functional platelets.
Platelets are anucleated cells, upon storage in blood banks the platelets show morphological and physiological changes called ‘platelet storage lesion’. PSL seriously affects the structure, function and lifespan of stored platelets; causing them to be ineffective after transfusion.
