Abstract

Background: Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal disorder and the most cause of intellectual disability, these children have impaired oral motor control as well as pulmonary problems. Objective: the purpose of the study is to investigate the effect of incentive spirometer training with selected oromotor exercises on oromotor and pulmonary functions in children with Down syndrome. To investigate the relation between oromotor functions and pulmonary functions in children with Down syndrome. Subjects: Thirty-four children from both sexes with Down syndrome participated in this study their age ranged from 6 to 12 years old. Methods: Children were divided randomly into two groups. group A (19 children) received oromotor exercises only, group B (15 children) received oromotor exercises and incentive spirometer training. Computerized spirometry model master screen pulmonary function test was used for assessing pulmonary functions (peak expiratory flow (PEF), forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in 1st s (FEV1), forced vital capacity / forced expiratory volume in 1st s ratio (FVC/FEV1), maximum mid expiratory flow (MMEF)) while the orofacial myofunctional evaluation with scores (OMES) was used to evaluate the oromotor function before and after twenty four sessions with total twelve hours of training, one hour per week over three months of conducting training program
